Tolles Buch in gewohnter Qualität - Octavia Butler schreibt wirklich sehr spannend und mitreißend, obwohl ich zuvor wirklich Bedenken hatte, da das Genre sicherlich nicht zu meinen Lieblingen zählt. Ich werde es in Kürze nochmals bestellen und verschenken, da ich sehr positiv überrascht bin
Octavia Butler at her best. Dieses Buch ist etwas anders als ihre anderen Bücher. Das Genre lässt sich nicht so leicht einordnen, aber das Buch ist super geschrieben, spannend zu lesen und lässt einen auch nicht mehr los, nachdem man es gelesen hat. Es zeigt einen Teil der amerikanischen Geschichte der Sklaverei auf eine wirklich spannende und interessante Weise. Die Hauptfigur, die wieder einmal schwarz und weiblich ist, wird immer wieder aus der heutigen modernen Zeit in die Vergangenheit gerissen, wo sie eine andere Welt erleben darf als die, die sie im modernen Amerika der heutigen Zeit erlebt. Die Geschichten, die sie in der Vergangenheit erlebt sind, wie gesagt, spannend und geben einem zu denken.
The book follows Dana, a young, modern black woman, who is snatched away from her life in 1976 California to the antebellum South. There she discovers her ancestors and deals with the oppression and violence that comes with the fact that she is a black woman in the antebellum South.The characters in this book are very well rounded and complex. Dana is the main character and the story is told from her point of view. She is thrown into a bad situation and handles is very well. Even though she has to make huge personal sacrifices and also her own personal values are tested constantly and she tries her best to keep everyone safe. This includes her husband and the other slaves. She stands up against Rufus, the son of a plantation owner and the boy/man who summons her to his time, who is portrayed as a sometimes friendly but often capricious and cruel character. It it stated that he is a product of his time and upbringing but it gets clearer and clearer that he is fixated on Dana and wants to get his way every time and gets dangerous if he is crossed.Plot wise the book focus more on the characters and their surroundings. If you expect a story about the civil war or Dana taking part in the underground railroad than you will be dissapointed. Since the book stays within in the strict boundaries of the plantation and focus on the relationships between Dana and the other characters.The historical era this book is based upon is well researched and represented. Here a fair warning the violence and brutality is protrayed very realistically and Octavia Butler is not sugarcoating anything.The writing style is straightforward and easy to follow but it still packs an emotional punch.In general I enjoyed this book even though is was a rather dark and gritty read. I would recommend this to anyone, for me it is a must-read, but there are some very graphic violent scenes in this book so be aware of this.
Ein bemerkenswertes Buch einer bemerkenswerten Autorin!Octavia Butler gilt als eine der ersten und immer noch raren Autor_innen, welche im Science Fiction Genre antirassistische und antisexistische Perspektiven mit innovativen und überraschenden Ideen verknüpft. Ihre Romane sind spannend und in ihrem Verlauf nicht vorhersehbar. Unbedingt empfehlenswert!!In "Kindred" geht es um eine junge schwarze Frau, die sich übergangshalber mit prekären Anstellungsverhältnissen in einer amerikanischen Stadt herumschlägt, während sie ihre litararische Karriere voranbringen möchte. Doch das nur als kurzer Einstieg. Zusammenlebend mit ihrem weißen Freund, ebenfalls schriftstellerisch ambitioniert, wird sie eines Tages, bei ihrem gemeinsamen Einzug in die neue Wohnung von einem seltsamen Schwindelgefühl erfasst, welches sie plötzlich wegdriften lässt. Aus dieser Bewusstlosigkeit erwachend, stellt sie fest, dass sie sich seltsamerweise nicht nur an einem anderen Ort, sondern viel schlimmer noch, in einer anderen Zeit wiederfindet, in den Südstaaten des 19. Jahrhunderts. Inmitten der Realität einer brutalen Sklavereigesellschaft, mit der Sie als Zeitreisende bald sehr unangenehm und komplex in Kontakt kommt. Ursache dieser Schwindelattacken ist eine geheimnisvolle Verbindung zwischen einem kleinen rothaarigen Kind (Sohn der Plantagenbesitzer_innen) und einer lebensbedrohenden Notsituation, in welches dieses im Laufe seines Lebens immer wieder gerät. Die Protagonostin tritt jeweils als Lebensretterin in Kraft und kann nur durch die eigene Erfahrung von starker Bedrohung/Verletzung in ihre Zeit und an ihren Ort zurückkehren. Diese Zeitreisen wiederholen sich, das Kind wächst heran. Wochen in der Vergangenheit sind jedoch nur Minuten in der Gegenwart. Ihr anfangs ungläubiger weißer Freund beschließt ebenfalls an dieser traumatisierenden Zeitreise teilzunehmen....mehr wird nicht verraten. Ein unglaublich intelligent und reflektiert geschriebenes Buch!!! Nicht umsonst hat diese, leider nicht mehr lebende, Autorin etliche Preise gewonnen.

Life in the Antebellum hardly left people whole, and just like Dana, I doubt if I would look back on the past through the same lenses.
